Did anyone expect anything less?
Iowa and Mid-Missouri did more than go down to the wire in Saturday's APFL championship game at the Mid-America Center. They went past it.
After missing a 30-yard field goal as time expired, veteran kicker Jerry Lakin knocked in a 34-yarder in overtime to give the Blackhawks a 31-28 victory and their second consecutive APFL title.
Iowa finished its best season in franchise history at 10-1. And Lakin, perhaps, finished a fulfilling career by kicking a.....
BLACKHAWKS BACK IN FINALS
By Tony Boone, Nonpareil Senior Writer
July 11, 2010 - Iowa used an old outdoor football formula to earn its way back to the American Professional Football League indoor championship game.
Relying on its running game and defense, the Blackhawks (9-1) pulled away from rival Kansas in a league semifinal Saturday at the Mid-America Center. Iowa rushed for 148 yards and six touchdowns in its 60-30 win while holding the six-time APFL champion Koyotes to just 110 total yards.
"We really wanted to get our guys a little more aggressive at the line of scrimmage," Blackhawk coach Mike Wolff said. "I think that kind of showed tonight."
Newcomer Chris Bradford scored three rushing touchdowns in his second game with Iowa, which will host Mid-Missouri in the title contest next week. He joined the squad after his....

By Tony Boone, Senior Nonpareil Writer
July 10, 2010 - Here we go again.
For the last six years, Iowa's finish in the American Professional Football League has come down to a playoff game against Kansas.
In the first four, the Koyotes ended the season for the Blackhawks. A year ago, Iowa finally turned the tables on the six-time league champions to win its first indoor title.
The two teams meet again tonight at 7 at the Mid-America Center in the APFL semifinals with the winner advancing....

Topeka, Ks. - The Kansas Koyotes (5-5) defeated the Junction City Force, 54-18, at Landon Arena in Topeka Friday night to advance to round two of the playoffs. Kansas will travel to Council Bluffs to take on the Iowa Blackhawks on July 10th at the Mid-America Center.
Blackhawks head to postseason with a win

June 27, 2010 - Shorthanded and sluggish, the Iowa Blackhawks still enter the playoffs on a high note.
The reigning American Professional Football League champions capped an 8-1 regular season with a 52-36 win over rival Kansas Saturday at the Mid-America Center.
It wasn't always pretty. In fact, the APFL's highest-scoring team sputtered to only one offensive score in the first half before finally pulling away late in the game.
The Blackhawks also played their regular-season finale without injured regulars Chris Moore, Mell Holliday, Mike Stuart, Derek Townsend and Jerry Lakin. Defensive lineman Albert Rodriguez also didn't play, although he wasn't hurt.
The game was virtually meaningless to Iowa, considering it had already wrapped up the...

APFL playoff seeding still up for grabs
June 22, 2010 - The Iowa Blackhawks have won the regular-season American Professional Football League title with a 41-37 win over the Mid-Missouri Outlaws on June 18th. The rest of the playoff seeding picture is still somewhat up for grabs.
The #2 ranked Outlaws (6-2) will host the #3 ranked Springfield WolfPack (5-3) this Saturday at the Mathewson Expo Center in Sedalia. The winner will earn the number two seed in the playoffs and the right to host a first round playoff game. The WolfPack hold the tiebreaker by defeating the Outlaws 52-41 at home last month.
Now, if the WolfPack lose, and the Kansas Koyotes defeat the Blackhawks, the WolfPack would fall all the way to the fourth seed and be forced to host a play-in game versus the Junction City Force on July 3rd with the winner of that game to travel to Council Bluffs on July 10th to play the Blackhawks.
Stay tuned, it's going to be an interesting weekend of football in the APFL.
Playoff Scenarios:
-
Blackhawks - Clinched #1 seed and home-field advantage throughout
-
Outlaws clinch #2 seed with win; #3 with loss to WolfPack
-
WolfPack clinch #2 seed with win; #3 seed with Koyotes loss
-
Koyotes clinch #3 seed with WolfPack loss and win over Blackhawks
Blackhawks claim regular-season APFL title
By Tony Boone, Senior Nonpareil Writer
June 19, 2010 - Eric Johnson? Nick Freet? Zach Kohlhoff?
They're not names familiar to fans that have followed the Iowa Blackhawks for the past couple of years. But thanks to them, the path to the American Professional Football League championship will once again come through Council Bluffs.
Johnson scored the game-winning touchdown from a yard out with 2:35 remaining Friday at the Mid-America Center. Then Freet recovered a fumble snap by Mid-Missouri at the Iowa 5 with nine seconds left to preserve the Blackhawks' 41-37 win over the Outlaws in a matchup of the top teams in the APFL.
Kohlhoff, meanwhile, filled in for injured kicker Jerry Lakin and booted a pair of field goals and three extra points as Iowa clinched the league's regular-season title and the home-field advantage in the postseason that comes along with it.
The victory was...
