Blackhawks win big; Defeat Springfield 57-13

MAY 5, 2008 - The Iowa Blackhawks sent a strong message to American Professional Football League league foes by crushing the Springfield Wolfpack 57-13 in the league opener Saturday night at the Mid-America Center.

The Blackhawks harassed Wolfpack quarterback Colby Hughes with five sacks and held their opponent to only 97 yards of total offense.

The Wolfpack (1-2) lost a narrow 40-28 decision to five-time defending champion Kansas April 19 in the first game for both teams. The margin of victory by the Blackhawks is sure to raise eyebrows in Topeka where the Blackhawks will travel May 24 for an early season showdown.

"Our guys played well for a first game. We talked about playing in our system and one of their scores was due to a breakdown," said fifth year head coach Mike Wolff. "I'd grade our effort as an A. The offense and defense were pretty good, but we still have things to work on."

Ryan Dennhardt led the Blackhawks with two sacks. Iowa recorded eight tackles for losses behind the line of scrimmage and delivered hard hits in the secondary. Scott Yates intercepted a pass and Chris Moore lit up several receivers with bone-jarring hits.

"We pride ourselves in being out there making plays. We're eight athletes out there flying around and having fun," said Moore. "I like the freedom at safety to roam the middle, hit somebody every play. We clicked well as a defensive unit that first game and it means a lot."

While the defense was outstanding, the young receiver corps delivered and quarterback Chuck Wright had a solid performance with 17-of-23 passing for 204 yards and five touchdowns.

Blackhawks name 25-man roster & projected starters

ACE HENDRICKS, Blackhawks staff writer

MAY 2, 2008 - The Blackhawks have announced their 25-man playing roster, as well as the opening game starting lineup that will include several new faces, but plenty of recognizable names to those longtime Blackhawks fans.

Nine new players dot the roster, seven of which will be in the starting lineup when the Blackhawks entertain the Springfield WolfPack this Saturday at the Mid-America Center.

One name fans will recognize is longtime quarterback Chuck Wright, who recently signed a five-year contract that will keep him in an Iowa uniform through the 2012 season. Wright led the APFL in passing last year with 1,240 yards and 26 touchdowns. He has been the starting passer for Iowa since 2004.

"I am extremely excited to be back where my career started," spoke the Blackhawks all-time passing leader in all aspects of the record book, "I signed the five-year deal because I want to finish my career with Iowa."

Wright will be looking for new receiver Chris Pomerleau, a Lewis Central graduate, to be one of his primary targets. The one-time Augustana College standout will also be Wright's backup at the quarterback position. He has good size and exceptional quickness, with the ability to make big plays with the ball in his hands.

On defense, Jon Helget, at nose guard, and Chris Smith, at defensive end, will team with second-year standout Ryan Hoden, a Council Bluffs Thomas Jefferson graduate, on the front line. Both Helget and Smith are newcomers to the Blackhawks. Helget spent time with the Lincoln Lightning of the NIFL and the Lincoln Renegades of the NAFL. Smith was a three-year letterman at the University of Nebraska-Omaha, and is listed at 6'2", 250-pounds. Smith will also see duty at linebacker. Another rookie, Josh Hayes, will start at linebacker.

In the secondary, Brandon Carrera and Travis Hines will start at cornerback positions, to team up with longtime safeties Chris Moore and Scott Yates. Carrera played at Hastings College and set a school record for interceptions in a season with seven in 2004. Hines was a three-year letterman at Dana College, and despite lacking size (5'9", 175-pounds) looks to have a successful season, as does the 6'1", 175-pound Carrera.

"I would like to make an impact on every play, whether it be making the big pick," explained Carrera, "or just taking out the lead blocker so a teammate can make the play."

Hines sees this season as one that if he performs at the level he feels he is capable of, the sky is the limit.

"I would love to be rookie of the year," spoke Hines, "if I play that well, we (as a team) should probably do real well. Our secondary has plenty of ability and experience. We should have a great season together."

Greg Ernster, a four-year starter at Peru State, will be snapping the ball to Wright, and is a sturdy 6', 300-pounds; he will be surrounded by Rich Rylee and DJuan Johnson, at the guard positions. Rounding out the offense will be Kurt Ferguson and Mike Stuart at wide receiver, and Elijah Simmons at fullback.

Jerry Lakin, who has played seven years of indoor football, returns after an all-star season in 2007 with the Blackhawks. Last season, Lakin connected on 25 of 33 extra points and two field goals for 31 points.

"I can honestly say, as an overall team, this is the best group we've ever had," said Wright, "I just want to do my part and help the Iowa Blackhawks bring home their first Indoor Football championship."

STARTING OFFENSE: QB-Chuck Wright; RB-Elijah Simmons; OL-DJuan Johnson, Rich Rylee, Greg Ernster; WR-Kurt Ferguson, Chris Pomerleau, Mike Stuart.

STARTING DEFENSE: DB-Chris Moore, Scott Yates, Travis Hines, Brandon Carrera; LB-Josh Hayes; DL-Ryan Hoden, Chris Smith, Jon Helget.
